Stargazing in Mongolia: best seasons and places

Mongolia offers some of the best night skies in the world. When and where to go.
Why are the stars so clear?
There is little artificial light and the air is dry and clear, so the Milky Way is plainly visible to the naked eye on the grasslands and in the desert.
Best time
- Summer (June-August): the Milky Way is easy to see, and nights are relatively warm.
- Autumn to winter: the air is even clearer and stars stand out (warm clothing is essential).
- Moon phase: around the new moon there is little moonlight, which is best for observation.
Best places
Ger camps on the grasslands (Terelj, Hustai, Central Mongolia and others) and the Gobi Desert are popular because they are far from city lights. With luck, you may also see shooting stars.
