Highlights and Information

Mongolia has many sights besides the grand steppe. Among them, the cultural landscape area called the Orkhon Valley holds many ruins and historic sites, the most famous being the Karakorum ruins. When the Mongol and Turkic nomads who had long lived in Mongolia founded their states, they chose the Orkhon River basin as the site of their capital. Chinggis Khaan too ordered that the capital of the Mongol Empire be established at that place. By Chinggis Khaan's order the city of Karakorum was built in 1235, and it is famous for having briefly been the center of the world. Erdene Zuu at the Karakorum ruins, one of Mongolia's World Heritage Sites. This site, which suddenly appears in the grand steppe, has a total of 108 impressive white stupas and an outer wall left surrounding a Buddhist monastery, a group of monasteries with a long history in Mongolia. Turtle Rock, a short walk from the ruins, and the "Karakorum Historical Museum", built by a joint project of the Mongolian Cabinet and JICA with Japanese ODA, are located here.

Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake (Great White Lake) is located in Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake National Park in Arkhangai Province, 590 km west of Ulaanbaatar.Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake was formed when a stream from the Khangai Mountains was blocked by lava, and together with the surrounding volcanoes it is designated a national protected area. Known as a scenic spot, it is one of the popular tourist attractions for people in Mongolia and abroad. Nearby are an extinct volcano crater and stone figures made in the Xiongnu era, called "Hun stone men."As a result of magma from the eruption of the Khorgo volcano hardening, this beautiful Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake formed at 2,060 m above sea level. The lake is 16 km wide, 20 km long and 4–10 m deep. Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake National Park has the Khorgo volcano, an extinct volcano 2,240 m high that you can view or hike.

Khorgiin Togoo ("hidden cauldron") is an extinct volcano in central Mongolia. It lies near the village of Tariat in Arkhangai Province, north of the Suman River. Thousands of years ago the lava of this volcano flowed toward the lake, covered the lakeshore and flowed further into the lake, and still pokes its head above the lake surface. You can see a crater 200 m in diameter and 100 m deep, surrounded by a lava field. Khorgiin Togoo (altitude 2,240 m). This extinct volcano was designated a nature reserve in 1965. The area around the volcano, hardened by lava bubbles, has interesting scenery. Climbing the mountain there also gives magnificent views right before your eyes.

Lake Khuvsgul, called the "Switzerland of Mongolia", is Mongolia's largest freshwater lake, near the Russian border. The river flowing out of the lake empties into Lake Baikal to the north. The lake, surrounded by conifers, is said to have the second highest transparency in the world (over 20 m), and sparkles reflecting the blue of the sky. In summer flowers bloom on a carpet of grass, and in autumn the trees turn golden.
To visit this lake, fly from Ulaanbaatar by small plane to the town of Murun. From this town, drive about 3 hours north by jeep on roads that are not roads. Although 96 streams flow into Lake Khuvsgul, only one, the "Egiin" River, joins the Selenge River and flows into Lake Baikal in Russia. Lake Khuvsgul is 136 km long and 262 m wide (sic), at an elevation of 1,645 meters.
All the accommodations are on the west side of the lake, so you can also enjoy the sunrise from the lake. At night you can hear the sound of the lake, and you will see a different side of Mongolia from the steppe.
Around Lake Khuvsgul, fishing, sport fishing and boat tours are popular. Along Lake Khuvsgul there is a wonderful lodge for bird watching, where you can enjoy seeing migratory birds arrive from Siberia.
