More than 20,000 kinds of insects live on our Earth, and more than 12,500 kinds live in Mongolia, which means that 60–65% of all insect species in the world can be found somewhere in Mongolian territory.
Mongolian butterflies and moths fall into two groups: those that feed in the daytime and those that feed at night. The daytime feeders include skippers, brush-footed butterflies, swallowtails, hawk moths, satyrs, whites and bluesand other families. They are beautifully colored and widely distributed across desert steppe, mountains, forests and grasslands.

Night-feeding moths include pyralids, lappet moths, prominents, geometers, giant silk moths and tortrix moths. There are more night-feeding species than day-feeding ones, and various new species have recently been found in Mongolia.

Parnassius nomion In the Mongolian summer a fresh breeze blows across the steppe, the night sky fills with stars, and flowers begin to bloom all at once in the mountains. At this time, flying over the grass on steep slopes is this Parnassius nomion. Among Mongolia's Parnassius species are the Apollo and the mountain Parnassius, but the nomion is known for its especially vivid and beautiful red spots.

You will collect and observe butterflies such as Parnassius nomion, Colias aurorina, Colias chrysotheme, Colias amurensis, Brenthis daphne, alpine fritillary, Hipparchia and Coenonympha species, Erebia medusa, Erebia hyrcana, Oeneis species, Lycaena and other blues, and various beetles.
