"Gobi" is the name of a vast region spreading from China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region into Mongolia. The Gobi region within Mongolia spans the provinces of Dornogovi, Dundgovi, Umnugovi and Govi-Altai, and the southern parts of Uvurkhangai, Bayankhongor, Khovd and Bayan-Ulgii Provinces, occupying most of the south of the country.
When people hear "desert" they tend to imagine land with nothing but sand and not a blade of grass, but much of the Gobi is a "gravel desert" covered with gravel and pebbles. In Umnugovi Province rise the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains, the eastern end of the Altai range, and the scenery changes greatly over short distances, with dunes, rocky mountains, canyons and sandstone cliffs. Tourism has a long history here, and in recent years regional development has also accelerated through the development of underground resources and border trade with China.
| How to Get There from Ulaanbaatar | There are scheduled flights or long-distance buses to Dalanzadgad, and from there you can charter a car to tour the various places. |
|---|---|
| Rough Guide to the Circuit | Because the sights are far apart, allow at least 5–6 days to see them all. |
| Car Charter Fee | About 280,000 Tg per day is a guide (fuel is often extra). |
Endlessly dry land continues, with great variety: pebble plains, large and small sand dunes, huge rocky mountains and sandstone landforms. Because the population is small, you can enjoy seeing wild animals running about close by. If you look at your feet, you will find that an unexpectedly large variety of grasses and flowers bloom, and a small world spreads out there too.
Because grass grows only sparsely, people live around wells with houses far apart from one another. Even if you can see the neighboring house, it looks like only a tiny dot. Perhaps because there is little traffic of people, many people are very happy to have guests, and some can sing the folk song "Urtiin Duu". The livestock are mainly camels, goats and sheep, and a distinctive way of life is led, making use of camel milk and camel power.
"A river of sand that suddenly appears". Dunes about 35 km northeast of Bayanzag in Bulgan soum, and one of the oldest tourist spots in the South Gobi. Locals call it "Gol (river)" because the sand flows in the wind and the dunes look like they move like a river.

One of the largest dunes in Mongolia, offering a panorama of beautiful scenery. They lie from northwest to southeast from Sevrei soum to Bayandalai soum, with a total length of about 180 km, an area of about 965 km², and a width of up to about 28 km at the widest point. You can enjoy a mysterious view with rocky mountains on the south side, a river on the north side, and oases scattered about. The highest point is about 195 m. When sand collapses on the steep slopes, a low sound like an airplane resounds, so it is also called "Duut Mankhan (the singing dunes)".

| Recommended | Climb the dunes in summer in the cool morning or evening. |
"The place that made the world buzz with dinosaur eggs". Sandstone hills lying along Mt. Altsbogd, known as the place where dinosaur eggs were first discovered in the world. The name means a place where saxaul (a desert shrub) grows abundantly. The hills are about 5 km wide and 8 km long, and about 50 m above the ground at the highest point. Locally they have long been called the "mud hills" and "camel hills", but because the red sandstone appears to burn in the setting sun, a foreign researcher who visited in the 1920s named them the "Flaming Cliffs".

"The Valley of the Bearded Vulture at 2,800 m". A canyon in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains at the eastern end of the Altai range, whose name means "Valley of the Bearded Vulture". The valley is very cool, and snow and ice remain until around the beginning of July. From the parking lot it is 15–20 minutes by horse, then about 10 minutes on foot to reach the snowfield. The whole round trip takes about 1 hour. On the way, pikas sometimes peek out from between the rocks. The scenery of the valley where snow remains even in summer is a representative highlight of the South Gobi.

| Distance from Ulaanbaatar | About 540 km south |
| Meaning of the name | "A place rich in water" |
| Main Character | A border-trade, tourism-base and mining-development town |
| Role in Gobi Tourism | The gateway town for sightseeing in the Gobi |
Dalanzadgad is the central city of Umnugovi Province, the largest province in Mongolia by area. It is about 540 km due south of the capital Ulaanbaatar. Once the main way to get here was by plane, but with paved roads now in place you can arrive by car, crossing the Gobi land from north to south.
"Dalanzadgad" is a name meaning "a place with plenty of water". The Dalanbulag River flows out of the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains rising just southwest of the town. The river's name means "70 springs", that is, "countless springs", and it has brought moisture to the dry Gobi land.
The origin of the town was only about 30 households gathering to live on the banks of this river. Today it has transformed into a large town enlivened by border trade with China, tourism and the development of underground resources.
The Gobi is a region known for dinosaur fossils. Dalanzadgad has a dinosaur-themed amusement park with more than 10 dinosaur models, along with rides such as a Ferris wheel and carousel. The province's recreation facilities are also adjacent.
At night you can see a show in which illuminated dinosaur models move, which suits families with children.
A museum with a modern exterior that opened in 2023. From the first basement floor to the fourth floor, it exhibits mainly the nature and archaeology of the Gobi region. The Gobi is known worldwide as a source of dinosaur fossils, and inside you can see scenes of excavation and fossil dinosaur bones. Among them, the specimen of a dinosaur buried in sand and fossilized while brooding its eggs is rare and well worth seeing.
In addition, there are rich exhibits of local minerals such as crystal and topaz, the ecology of the two-humped camel, and how nomads keep livestock along with related tools. For some exhibits, scanning a QR code displays an explanation. As a facility where you can learn about Gobi nature and life at once, it is one of the highlights of sightseeing in Dalanzadgad.
The Gobi Desert spreading across southern Mongolia. Much of it is a desert of pebbles and low shrubs, but after driving nearly 200 km from the South Gobi, a huge sand dune suddenly spreads out. Continuing like mountains and rising as far as you can see, these dunes are more than 50 m high. Below the dunes is a rare landscape with grassland, where grass and short trees grow and small streams flow. You often see camels trekking with tourists on their backs. It is a wonderful sightseeing spot where you can enjoy moving scenery at this great dune, said to be No. 1 in Mongolia. Of course, you can also stay in a ger from which you can see this great dune. A stay in great nature with nothing man-made as far as the eye can see makes you completely forget everyday life. In the slowly flowing time, if you stroll the dunes plodding along on a camel and gaze at a sky full of stars at night, you will feel you are embraced by Mongolia's nature.
In the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountains there is a beautiful place called Yolyn Am. Yolyn Am means "Valley of the Eagle" in Mongolian. Eagles do fly above the valley, so the place name makes sense. The valley is at a high elevation of 2,200 m, and snow remains in this area even in early summer. In midsummer it melts, but the snowless valley is cool and pleasant. On a hot summer day, walking on the ice in the valley is fun. Also, wild sheep and goats, wolves, Gobi bears, vultures, wild asses and others live here.
A place known worldwide because dinosaur eggs and fossils were found here. This area became known to the world around the 1920s through the American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews. Andrews excavated several dinosaur fossils and eggs here, which are now said to be on display in America's largest museum. The area is also famous for many rare objects found that prove people have lived here for millions of years. If you look carefully, you might find a fragment of a dinosaur fossil.
A domestic flight viewing the Mongolian land from the air. Our destination is the Gobi Desert, occupying almost all of "Umnugovi (South Gobi) Province" at the very south of Mongolia. It takes 1.5 hours by domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad in the South Gobi. Flights operate daily in the tourist season.
Small propeller planes carrying 50–100 people fly daily from June.
