About Horse Riding and Nomad Homestay in Mongolia Free WiFi ❣
A tour unlike any other, where you live with local nomads in a homestay and gallop on horseback through grand nature. On a trip to Mongolia, please do try horse riding. Riding while gazing at the endless steppe and wide sky feels wonderful and refreshing. The gentle expressions of the horses are also soothing. Mongolian horses are short and small, so they are said to be easy for beginners to ride. Take care not to stand behind a horse. Even complete beginners can be at ease with a led horse: you follow the lead horse and enjoy a relaxed horse trek. Experienced riders can enjoy the Mongolian steppe stretching on forever. On the steppe the direct sunlight is strong and the ultraviolet rays are powerful. There is little shade to escape to, so don't forget to bring a hat, sunscreen and other protective items. A life with almost no running water, electricity, gas or cars. The number of people who can stay with one nomad family is limited (about 1 to 3 people). For the nomad ger homestay, our staff explain the purpose of your trip and guide you to a family that has understood it. They may be out herding, but most are large families with a father, mother, children, grandfather and grandmother. Milking, preparing meals, collecting drinking water and fuel (livestock dung!), looking after the horse tack, caring for the children and more: there is a lot to do.

Safety Rules for Horse Trekking
Mongolian horses are kept in a form close to natural nomadic herding. They can be said to receive relatively less human care than horses in Japan. Mongolian horses are thicker-nerved and more easygoing than Japanese horses, but they are living animals, and if they are startled, annoyed or frightened they may get angry, kick or thrash about. During horse trekking, please strictly observe the following.
★ Before riding
So as not to startle the horses, take great care not to let hats, handkerchiefs, scarves and the like blow off, or to drop cameras, backpacks and so on.
Backpacks and waist pouches hinder free body movement and make rustling or jingling noises that startle the horses, so please avoid carrying them as far as possible. Also, please remove noisy or shiny items such as hair pins and key chains, as horses are afraid of them. Please do not carry shoulder bags or hand bags.
Horses are living creatures. Do not go near and shout (including cries such as "Eek!" or "How cute!"). Also, never go near or touch the rear half of the horse, as it will be startled and kick.
Avoid clothes that rustle, flashy colors such as red, yellow and pink, and fluorescent raincoats, as they startle horses.
While riding, insects or small flies may fly into your eyes, so wear glasses.
Shoes with flat soles fit best. Uneven soles can prevent your foot from coming out of the stirrup in an emergency, so please avoid them.
Wear a helmet when necessary.
★ Mounting and dismounting
Always mount and dismount with the help of the instructor, guide or horse handler.
Always mount and dismount from the left side. Take care not to go behind the horse.
When mounting, first put your left foot in the stirrup, sit in the saddle, then put your right foot in the stirrup. Take care not to put your feet too far into the stirrups. While riding too, it is necessary to check whether your feet are too far into the stirrups.
When dismounting, always first take your left foot slightly out of the stirrup, then take your right foot out of the stirrup and put it on the ground, and then take your left foot out.
For mounting and dismounting as above, the horse handlers and guides will mostly help you, so it is safe.
As for handling the horse, Mongolians hold the reins in the left hand and hold the whip or lead rope together in the right hand. You may hold the reins in whatever way you like, but it is safe to hold the saddle with one hand. Never wrap the reins around your hand.
Beginners should leave it to the horse handler or guide and ride with a lead rope held. If you want to control the horse yourself, hold the reins naturally in one hand and grip the saddle firmly with the other. It is also important to take care not to put your feet too far into the stirrups. To turn right, pull the reins to the right; to turn left, pull to the left.
The horse moves by the reins. To make the horse go, loosen the reins a little and shout "Chuu!" loudly. To stop, pull the reins toward you. Some horses stop just by pulling the reins, and some do not. If the horse is running fast, pull the reins several times to slow it down, or pull the reins while heading uphill.
If you suddenly make the horse run, or pull the reins sharply while it is running fast, the horse may rear up. In such a case, keep pulling the reins gradually.
While riding, look carefully at the condition of the road ahead. Avoid road bumps, rodent holes, ditches, paper blowing in the wind, plastic, dry grass, various wires, trash such as plastic, paper and plastic bottles, and dead livestock or animals, pull the reins, act slowly, and steer your horse with care.
If a car or motorbike should appear, the horse may be startled, so do not panic: slowly pull the reins, stop the horse and wait for the car or motorbike to pass.
Horses act as a group, but some horses dislike going along with horses of a different herd.
While riding, taking off clothes, eating, drinking, taking things out or putting them away, and taking photos is dangerous. The horse may be startled or suddenly start running. If you want to take photos, always call out to the horse handler or guide without hesitation.
When going down a slope, lean toward the back of the horse and go down slowly.
In early spring, the horses have just finished winter and their legs are a little weak, so they tend to stumble. Always pull the reins slightly and take care to go at as even a speed as possible.
Always follow the instructions of the instructor, tour conductor, guide, horse handler and nomads. During breaks too, if you want to take photos, call out to the horse handler.
Note: We are not responsible for accidents caused by failure to observe the above horse riding safety rules.
