Highlights and Information

Mongolia Mountain Climbing Tour, AltaiTavan Bogd Massif National Park

Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Altai Tavan Bogd (the Altai Five Great Mountains) National Park covers about 630,000 hectares (sic) and is Mongolia's largest national park. The five great perpetual-snow mountains tower: Khuiten Peak (4,374 m), the highest in the Altai mountains, Nairamdal Peak (4,192 m), Burged Peak (4,068 m), Malchin Peak (4,051 m) and Ulgii Peak (4,050 m), and above them are scenic lakes such as Khurgan, Khoton and Dayan. The foot of Khuiten Peak is covered by the Potanin Glacier. In the national park live rare wild animals such as the Siberian ibex, maral deer and moose. Besides these, there are many ruins, deer stones, rock paintings and Turkic-era stone figures in the park. The average elevation of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is 3,000 m.
Potanin Glacier
The glacier is 20 km long and 5 km wide, with an area of 53.5 square kilometers. Flowing from heights of 4,365 to 2,873 m, this glacier is named after the Russian scholar Potanin, who carried out two geological expeditions in Mongolia in the 19th century. The ice of the glacier is 229 m at its thickest and 77 m at its thinnest. It is 180 km from the provincial capital.
