You can see features of the Mongolian Gobi: sand dunes, oases, forests of saxaul trees, the astonishing rocks called Senjit Khad, petrified trees and 200-million-year-old dinosaur bones that remain in their natural state.

The Danzanravjaa Museum was founded in 1991 in memory of the greatest and most unusual intellectual in Mongolian history. The museum displays Danzanravjaa's original artistic works and literary manuscripts, together with his books, religious items, stage costumes, personal belongings and similar objects illustrating his life and work. A 17th-century Japanese samurai sword is also on display.

Danzanravjaa, the Living Buddha of the Gobi, had his disciples gather among the many colored hills (near Khamar Monastery) and lay out the plans for where Shambhala would land, and built a place for meditation practice with wooden stupas, doors and a pile of stones. At that place, his holiness prayed to meet all his disciples in the sacred Shambhala Land, and this place is known as where Shambhala now lands. Therefore it is one of the holiest places today for prostrations and circumambulation.

Khamar Monastery was founded in the 1820s by Danzanravjaa, the famous 19th-century Mongolian educator and literary figure. The monastery was an important center of the Red Sect of Buddhism and the seat of the Living Buddha of the Gobi. He was an outspoken critic of the society he lived in, its rigid class system and the characteristics of his age. He devoted great effort to the cause of public education, which he advanced at Khamar Monastery through founding public schools, a theater, a museum and a library.

On the private-car journey from Ulaanbaatar to Terelj National Park (70 km) you can see interestingly shaped rocks and stones; please look at Turtle Rock among them.
A popular tourist attraction with rocky mountains of rare shapes said to be natural miracles and the 15 m tall Turtle Rock. It was protected as a national park around 1993. Not only local Mongolians but tourists from many countries come to enjoy this scenery. You can enjoy horse trekking, hiking and mountain walks in beautiful nature, meet nomads who live on the steppe caring for livestock, taste homemade dairy products, and even climb Turtle Rock.

The Chinggis Khaan Statue Theme Park stands on a hill above the Tuul River, 54 km east of Ulaanbaatar, surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. The memorial site, known as Tsonjin Boldog, shares the history of that era. The park covers 212 hectares, and a 30 m tall horse statue rises at its center on a circular pedestal 12 m high and 30 m in diameter.

The village recreates 13th-century Mongolia as a small kingdom so that visitors can experience the lifestyle of that time in a real setting. Here you can dine with the king and queen, visit the nobles, learn how to write in the Mongolian script, and try playing beautiful natural sounds on the morin khuur, the horse-head fiddle made with horsetail hair.

Gandan Monastery
Visit Gandan Monastery, founded in 1838 by the fifth Bogd Gegeen, Javzandamba.
It is the center of Mongolian Buddhism, with a 20 m tall statue of Avalokiteshvara, more than ten facilities housing about 900 monks, and a Buddhist university.
Chinggis Khaan Square
Move to Chinggis Khaan Square in the center of the city. This is the historic place where Mongolia, then under Chinese rule, first declared its independence in 1921. Today it is Ulaanbaatar's liveliest place, with government ceremonies, parades, open-air concerts and other events held almost every day.
Zaisan Hill
Go to Zaisan Hill, with views over all of Ulaanbaatar. The monument with inscriptions and mosaic pictures was built to commemorate friendship between Mongolia and the Soviet Union. Next to it are a large Buddha statue and a tank said to have taken part in World War II.
