Lake Khuvsgul in northern Mongolia. This lake, four times the size of Japan's Lake Biwa, freezes thick enough for a 4-ton truck to drive on. Every year an ice festival and skating tournament are held on this lake. Events include a horse sleigh race, Mongolian wrestling on the ice, and a 100 km skating marathon held over two days, so the program is packed.
Enjoy the many events held on the ice: an ice bar where even the ger, furniture and tableware are made of ice; dog sled, horse sleigh and reindeer races; Mongolian folk dances and concerts; an ice wrestling tournament; and shaman rituals.

Eagle Festival (Festival of the Eagle Hunters)
Organizer: Kazakh Development Foundation
Period: March 2–4 (3 days)
Venue: Chinggis Khaan Village Tourist Camp, near Ulaanbaatar
Details: The Kazakh Festival is a traditional festival of the Kazakh people, held every year in Bayan-Ulgii Province. For the past four years it has also been held near Ulaanbaatar. Bayan-Ulgii Province has long been a region where falconry and eagle hunting flourish.
Watch a show in which the eagle hunters gather, compete over whose eagle is best, and catch prey.
Its purpose is to introduce the traditions and culture of the Kazakhs to the people of Ulaanbaatar and to tourists through a traditional Kazakh festival. At this festival, eagles catch small animals such as foxes, and there are horsemanship shows. Among the Kazakhs, it is said the person with the most beautiful and strongest eagle is the coolest.
A leather bag called a skin is used. This is a competition in which brave Kazakh men on horseback go to take a single skin.
Men on horseback start all at once toward a skin placed far away. The first to get hold of the skin wins. It is a very thrilling game.
A competition unique to the Kazakhs, famous as eagle hunters. An eagle hunter is a person who hunts using an eagle. It tests the coordination between eagle and hunter. The eagle is taken to the top of a small hill. The hunter calls his eagle from below. The called eagle swoops down from the hill toward the hunter.
The hunter whose eagle returns to his arm first wins. The sight of the eagle swooping down looks like hunting and is very cool.
An event competition for interaction between Kazakh men and women.
A man kisses the cheek of a woman he likes. The woman pretends to be angry and chases the man. Both ride horses. A woman who catches up with the man pretends to hit him with her horse whip. If caught by the woman, he is disqualified. The man who gets away within the competition time wins. It is a little surprising, but the spectators keep smiling.
Camel Festival (Winter Two-Humped Camel Festival)
Period: every year February 6 to 8 (3 days)
Venue: Bulgan village, South Gobi Province
Purpose: The purpose of the Camel Festival is to increase the number of camels, protect them, and increase products made from camel milk and hair. It also helps develop winter tourism and support the lives of local nomads. The number of camels decreases every year, and changes in the natural environment are one reason. In the past nomads moved by camel, but recently they have come to use cars and other machines. More nomads are also using camels as food in winter. The Camel Festival has been held since 1997 to increase the number of camels.
It has become one of the big winter festivals of Mongolia. Besides the festival, you can also sightsee in the South Gobi. This is the vast Gobi Desert spreading across southern Mongolia, where the winter Bactrian camel festival is held.
About 100 km northwest of Dalanzadgad, the capital of South Gobi Province and the home of the film "The Story of the Weeping Camel"*. The "Camel Festival" is held again this year in Bulgan village, the venue of this annual celebration. It was originally held to protect the declining camels, and visitors from Mongolia and abroad increase year by year to see this "festival of camels, by camels, for camels". Watch and enjoy many competitions such as camel races and camel polo, with the camels so closely tied to the people of the Gobi Desert.
